This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.
History of the Catholic church from the renaissance to the French revolution Volume 1 James MacCaffrey Books
Fascinating insight into why there was a Reformation and what led up to it. I never realized what a large role politics and personal ego played. The turmoil of the era is well displayed. Although the book is from a Catholic perspective, it seems to be a balanced account. The author certainly does not go light on Church leadership in this era.Product details

History of the Catholic church from the renaissance to the French revolution Volume 1 James MacCaffrey Books Reviews
A good resource.

A clear and precise account of the reformation period. James MacCaffrey was a professor on Church History in Maynooth University in Ireland. He points out clearly the facts propelling the initial reformation, the desire of the European Nobles to possess Church land, and their desire to be free of Papal influence in the ruling of their estates. Also, of course, the poor quality of Catholic Clergy in some areas, e.g. Scotland. There is an account of the University of Louvain, ( in Belgium). How the advanced learning of the clergy there were to fight the new sects appearing. A true and excellent read,
It is a bit dated but worth reading if you are interested in Catholic history from the Renaissance to the French Revolution.
Above perspectives about the level of violence is based on individual acceptance about the truth of the history of the Catholic Church. I find the questions inappropriate and suggestive.
The obviously complete coverage of the history required a genuine scholar as it's author. To grasp and remember all of the names and incidents over the centuries covered will take slow reading but I found it to be excellent. If one purchases this book in hard cover, it's make a "keeper". Takes more than one reading to grasp the details.
