Mostly repeated from Knockout but this is from Kellen’s p.o.v. But is also with the toxic cheating Laney and him with the occasional time with Jenna. All his dark secrets, pasts and the ugliness of what he went through and still fights daily with.I don’t and didn’t like Laney from neither book and this one makes her downright disdain in her actions and rubbing her and Kellen into Jenna’s shaky feelings. I’m glade she confessed her cheating on Kellen even still is, heck her parent knew she was and they didn’t say anything to Kellen, really? Dan should have told him anyways, his oldest daughter is trouble and he supposed to help Kel with the truth, why didn’t he?
I skimmed a lot I couldn’t read him with the wh0re Laney and also the repeated parts but the rest I did read and to read what happened in his childhood was dark and to see why he shuts down with the ladies and try his hardest to be fully there with Jenna is understandable. That’s why I gave it 4.

Brawler North Star Series Book 2 edition by Tracey Ward Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This novel is funny, smart, and devastating all at the same time. This is not your regular type NA romance, it is so much more than that. The second in the North Star series, this brings us Kellen's POV, and the timeline spans roughly about a decade. For those who have already read Knockout, this book makes it really very clear why the main character Kellen is the way he is and who he really is on the inside, and it broke my heart.
Brawler is also peppered with some pretty amazing characters, be they central to the story or not. Tracey Ward's sense of humour is seen throughout Brawler and she is damn funny. You want a good laugh and a good cry all at once? This. This here book is for you.
We have to be, to get through some of the hard issues and plots that are laid before us... This book is no exception... I need to let out a big sigh before I begin...*pause* *deep breath* *sigh*...Okay...
Geez, this book is tough. First of all, great writing, truly poignant, and well...smart!
Secondly, it's not a skip through the tulips. I would say there is sexy time but with many complications. You're not wrapped in a big romance, sexy hug! Oh, Kellen, very sexy but fractured. He has been dismantled and this book walks you through putting him back together. Love triangle, not exactly terrible. The triangle is necessary to explain the depths someone goes to, to numb themselves...self preservation is a b****! Kel and Laney...Terrible! Hated her! Kel and Jenna, frustrating but beautiful!
Finally, I really hated the ending... Travel... Really? I am annoyed that the blurb says it's a standalone. It could be but we have Jenna's POV book and a third coming out? With no real closure at the end of this one! I'm still deciding if I will read those? The Writing is great and I think many many people will like this story but I'm just the kind of girl that after I have bent my heart into a pretzel... I need a damn unicorn crapping rainbows! I'm not sure that I have it in me to hear the pain again??? I also think this being called a standalone is a bit... Misleading! Not happy with that at all. I would give it a three because of this but I can't because it's so well done!
Not really an HEA... Yet? Painful. Beautiful. Real. No epilogue... More books...
4.5 stars. Technically this is book 2 of the series, but can be read independently of book 1. (Book 2 is from Kellen's POV, book 1 from Jenna's.) Kellen Coulter grew up without his father. His mother died when he was very young, and he spent the next decade in abusive foster homes. Even though he's grown up on the wrong side of the tracks, he's extremely intelligent. But he harbors so much anger in him, something he refers to as the monster, and takes that out in the boxing ring. During Kellen's senior year of high school, just when he thinks he's screwed up his future, an unlikely ally in the form of attorney Dan, takes him under his wing. Kellen forges a very strong bond with all of Dan's family, including his daughters Laney and Jenna. Laney is closer to Kellen's age at 16, but it's 13-year old Jenna that, with her uncanny ability to read Kellen, where the real alliance is formed. Now forms the really weird semi-love triangle. While Kellen and Laney on-again/off-again date for years, there is no true love between them. Laney is seriously a character you will grow to hate with absolutely no redeeming qualities about her. Kellen is so emotionally closed off, with deep-seeded demons we don't find out about until very late in the book. Kellen and Jenna have always been each others confidant, but the age difference is always in the way. Then one day, Kellen realizes Jenna is growing up into a beautiful woman. And that fact scares him to death because he wants her. Kellen feels he can never be loved or is capable of loving. I was seriously torn at how much turmoil I felt for Kellen. He was swirling in an abyss, and I'm surprised he was able to keep it together. Although the storyline spanned many years, I kind of think that was important to establish just how long Kellen has floundered. This book was very emotional and dealt with some heavy subject matter, but I loved it.
