An Eye for an Eye Zach and Katie Story Redwood Falls Book 2 edition by Lynda Chance Literature Fiction eBooks
Until Redwood Falls, I have enjoyed all of Chance's work and absolutely loved some of it. Sadly, An Eye for an Eye depends on one unbelievable fact, a hole in the plot that turned a mediocre read into one I couldn't like. You see, Zach does not know what happened to Katie.Zach wants Katie. Despite some a**hat behavior from him after the death of his wife and unborn child, Katie is attracted to Zach. But she's also afraid of him and of intimacy with any man because she was raped in high school. (This isn't a spoiler, btw.) I have no problem with Katie's reactions. HOWEVER, I find it completely unbelievable that Zach remains totally unaware of this crime.
Why? Redwood Falls is supposed to be a small town. Everyone knows each other. Katie testified in court against her attacker. Zach's SISTER was involved in the case, and the bad guy went to prison. But because Zach's living in another city, he's out of the loop. He comes home but because people in town are scared to mention Katie's family to him, he knows zilch. Oh please. He doesn't catch any gossip, read/watch the news, anything? Does not hear even one rumor? I'm sorry, communities and individuals just don't work this way. Zach's ignorance goes on for years and is pretty much the major source of tension between Katie and Zach. Once he finds out what happened, the HEA occurs darn quick.
Chance used to focus on character. This silly plot device kept the protagonists apart for way too long.

An Eye for an Eye Zach and Katie Story Redwood Falls Book 2 edition by Lynda Chance Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I'm not quite sure of what to make of this installment of the Redwood Falls series. Allow me to preface by stating that I normally love Ms. Chance' s work. I love her steamy stories of the controlling and possessive alpha male! In this story, however, I got a rather inconsistent alpha male. I wasn't at all impressed by Zach. In fact, I really didn't feel that the author showed us enough of the couple together to really understand why the suddenly felt they were in love. POSSIBLE SPOILERS Zach is initially a selfish and conniving man who goes to great lengths to get Katie in his bed, and after discovering why she's so squeamish, he suddenly turns into this gentle relenting man. Now, I understand that he is sensitive to Katie' s trauma, but he gives up all control, and in essence, betrays his character type!
Additionally, Ms. Chance is known for the spice of her novels. There is very little spice here. In fact, there is quite a wait for any steam. It's not until the last ten percent of the story that the couple "seals the deal", and then it's onward to marriage. I just couldn't swallow the supposed "chemistry" of this couple...from resentment to hate to lust to love!
Finally, IN MY OPINION, the story simply wasn't well-written. If an erotic writer decides to reduce the spice, it's wise to compensate for it in dialogue. Unfortunately, what we got was a heaping of Zach' s internal turmoil. This is why there was little indication of true chemistry between the couple.
I will continue to read works by Ms. Chance, but I hope she goes back to her winning recipe of spice, possession, control, and alpha male. This is an installment that I cannot recommend.
I love all of Lynda Chance's books. This one is probably my least favourite, because Zach is an ass for most of it. It's still an ok read, but there I have difficulty with the fact that he blackmailed Katie into being with him, and he only stopped the blackmail when he found out she was raped. All of Lynda Chance's heroes are mega Alpha, but for me, Zach's 'redeeming quality' wasn't that redeeming, because he wouldn't have let her out of their agreement if Katie hadn't been raped.
So, I do re-read this book (I reread everything) but I tend to only re-read the last third of the book, because before that, I just want to hit Zach 'til he bleeds.
I almost didn't buy this due to all the negative comments. As far as I'm concerned they're wrong. Half the time I had a lump in my throat or tears in my eyes. Anyone who doesn't understand the changes in Zach has never been badly hurt and Katie's reactions to everything were so true to life. I actually stayed up half the night because I couldn't put my down. Josh and Hannah's story is great. I fell right into it since I met my husband at 16, dated at 17, and left home to marry him at 18 ( and yes, we're still together after 45 years) but in a lot of ways I like Zack and Katie's story even more. Can't wait for Ethan and Ava's story and what happened about the baby. Fingers crossed the parents didn't make her give it up.
Honestly, this is the very first LC book that dissapointed me. I know that Josh and Hannah's story is a very hard act to follow, but there were just so many near hits that over-all this book didn't satisfy my LC craving. I liked and hated both characters equally. Katie was hard not to like, but she was someone who obviosuly had terrible issues, and the fact that she never went for therapy of any kind (and her family never pressed either) made her journey painful for the reader. I so understood where her head was at, and how she needed to be there to propel the story forward but there came a time when she needed to get her act together. Zach I loved too, but waiting arounf for over three years for this girl to get her head together? God love him, but he was starting to look like a schlemp for pining away in the wings. He was almost border-line pathetic in his attitude and attempts to win over Katie.
I love LC, and she was and always will be an automatic buy for me. I also know that you can't please all the people al lthe time. This time is my time. Will I buy her next book? Hell yeah. I just couldn't connect with this one. Sorry.
